Sandtray therapy is a form of expressive therapy that can assist children in making sense of their inner world. A creative space for children to explore and express their thoughts, feelings and experiences.
During a sandtray therapy session, the child is provided with a tray of sand and a wide range of miniature figures, toys, and objects. The child is encouraged to use the objects to create a scene or a world within the sand tray. The scene they create can represent their thoughts, emotions, conflicts, or real-life situations they are facing.
The child is given the freedom to manipulate the objects and arrange them in the sand as they wish. The therapist may observe the child's actions and engage in a dialogue to better understand the child's choices and the meaning behind their creation. This process allows the child to express themselves symbolically, often revealing insights and emotions that may be difficult to express verbally.
Sandtray therapy can be particularly effective for children who have experienced trauma, anxiety, grief, or other emotional difficulties. It provides a safe and contained space for them to explore their experiences and work through their emotions and challenges in a non-threatening manner. The tactile nature of the sand and the opportunity to create and manipulate the miniature objects can be comforting and soothing for children, allowing them to express themselves more freely.
